Please, clear the term ” Direct and Indirect Input device”

I only know that if we input by hand movement, it is Indirect and If not hand movement, it is direct.
    What is a mouse??
if it is a indirect input device because of hand movement . Then, why Light pen is not an indirect input divice??

    Please clear this confusion.
    Thanks

      Shankar,

In fact, they had to be called direct entry input devices and indirect entry input devices. They are distinguished as if the entry is direct or not. Or, if the data entered into the CPU is already in machine readable form or not.

Direct data entry devices are used when large volumes of data must be entered into the computer quickly. Consider how long it would take for the cashier to add up the cost of your shopping if she had to enter the price of every item you purchased. Nowadays barcode systems make this task much quicker. There are a variety of different direct data entry devices available. Different devices are suitable for different applications (tasks).

Bar code readers, magnetic stripe codes, smart cards, magnetic ink character readers, OCR, OMR, etc are the direct entry input devices.

It’s not just large amount or a few bits, but whether it sends data directly to CPU or requires some encoding decoding process. In case of indirect entry input devices, they contain the process but direct entry input devices sends the data directly without any encoding/decoding process.

          Hope it helps?

      Hardik, please check following fact:

During the 1960s through the early 1990s, Radio Shack marketed its free battery card; a free wallet-sized cardboard card that entitled the bearer to one free battery a month when presented at one of their stores. These cards also served as generic business cards for the salespeople in the 1980s; the “battery club” card was still used until the company-wide changes in the early 1990s.
In 1977, two years after the famous MITS Altair, Radio Shack introduced the TRS-80, one of the first mass-produced personal computers that became a big hit. This was followed by the TRS-80 Color Computer designed to attach to a television for use as a monitor. In the late 1980s, Radio Shack made the transition from its proprietary 8-bit computers to its proprietary IBM-PC-compatible Tandy computers; however, shrinking margins and a lack of economies of scale led Radio Shack to exit the computer-manufacturing market by the mid-1990s.

Aah! Sorry for the confusion. I wonder how easily these errors creep in!

The roots of IBM date back to the 1880s, decades before the development of electronic computers. Since the 1960s or earlier, IBM has described its formation as a merger of three companies: The Tabulating Machine Company, the International Time Recording Company, and the Computing Scale Company. However the 1911 stock prospectus states that four companies were consolidated; the three described by IBM and the Bundy Manufacturing Company. Further, there was no merger – the new company was a holding company; the individual companies continued to operate using their established names until the holding company was eliminated in 1933. The consolidation was engineered by noted financier Charles Flint, and the new company was called the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company(CTR). CTR was incorporated on June 16, 1911 in the state of New York, U.S.A. [Excerpt from Wikipedia]

So from above discussion the answer of Q. No 47 is correct answer. Please make correction on Q. No. 462.

      Saroj ji,

The advantage of high-level language is machine independence in cost of compromised efficiency. So, lower efficiency is the correct answer. I need to update the PDF file if it is mentioned otherwise there.
