Microsoft Word Questions #4 – Save existing document with different name

March 17, 2014 by Suresh Khanal Leave a Comment

How can you save existing document with different name?

This is probably one of the most required task if you are working with Microsoft Word for your work.

It is very obvious that you should save your files whenever you created one. It is not only for new files, but for them too that you open and make some changes. Without saving, your changes will not be updated in the file already.

Many times, you get files from somebody and you don’t wish to destroy the original version of that file, but you need to make some modification and changes. Don’t you?

If the document is opened currently in your Microsoft Word application, you can easily save that file with different name.

Before we jump to answer today’s question, lets think about it first. To save files in Microsoft Word, it offers two commands and it is very crucial to understand why there are two commands to save files.

  1. Microsoft Word Questions - File Save & Save As CommandsFile >> Save
  2. File >> Save As

For new document you just create and try to save your file for the first time, you’ll see same dialog box, no matter whether you choose Save or Save As! It’s because you have not provided a name, type and saving location yet.

But, when you open an existing file and made some changes, the role of these two types of commands comes into play. In this situation, if you choose File >> Save, Word will update the file as it’s current status in disk. On the contrary, if you selected File >> Save As, it will prompt you the ‘Save As’ dialog box so that you can specify file name, file type, storage location etc.

Thus, File >> Save As is the command to save existing document with different name.
