This question "Which enables you to move directly to specific location in a document?" got a lot of confusion and the dilemma heightened because many websites presented wrong answer. So what's the correct answer?
Which enables you to move directly to specific location in a document?
- Subdocument
- Bookmark
- Cross Reference
- Outlines
The question obviously is related to document navigation. There are various elements you use to make your document easily navigate. Structuring properly using subdocument, inserting bookmark, hyperlinks, cross reference, table of contents are some of the mechanism you can implement in your document to make the reader easy to find the required location in document and jump to and from there as needed. Apart from above elements, your readers can also use outlines to see the structure of your document and jump to the specific location quickly.
Thus, looking upon the options all are the ways to jump to the specific location in document. Then which enables you to move to a specific location in document?
Which enables you to move directly to specific location in a document?
Subdocument
Looking at the first option, Sub-document. Large documents can be created using many subdocuments so that managing them is easier. You can work on individual subdocument and assign the book level formatting and design on main document. You can jump to the specific subdocument from the main document but this is not of the kind jumps the question is indicating. Thus this option is not much suitable as correct answer.
The rest three options are more suitable.
Bookmark
A bookmark identifies a location or a selection of text that you name and identify for future reference. For example, you might use a bookmark to identify text that you want to revise at a later time. Instead of scrolling through the document to locate the text, you can go to it by using the Bookmark dialog box. Cross Reference
A cross-reference refers to an item that appears in another location in a document. For example, you can mention "Figure 1" in your document and refer the reader to the figure's location elsewhere in the document. By default, Word inserts a cross-reference as a hyperlink that you can click to be taken directly to the cross-referenced item. You can create cross-references to items such as headings, footnotes, bookmarks, captions, and numbered paragraphs. If you add or remove content that causes the referenced item to move, you can update the cross-reference. Outline
When you have a complex document to organize, Outline View (View > Outline) helps you see and focus on its structure. You can use Outline View to create or edit headings, adjust heading levels, and rearrange the content until everything is right where you want it. Discussion
Well, now, which enables you to move directly to specific location in a document?
Reader's perspective
Let's suppose we have a document that contains all of the above. The document is well structured with subdocuments. It contains lots of bookmarks and there is a book mark for our required location as well; document is well written with lots of cross references and there is a cross reference visible to our required location; and outline view is always there if document is created using headings and styles.
In such condition, how will you jump to a specific location you need?
Will you simply click to that cross reference and jump to the location or will you go to open the Bookmarks dialog box and find the required bookmark and click to GoTo button to jump to the location? Or, will you switch to outline view and click on the outline list to jump to that location? Which method will you use to jump to your required location?
Okay, that's from reader's perspective. Now let's assume we are the writer of the document.
Writer's Perspective
You wish to make your reader easy to jump to a specific location in your document. Then, will you think that MS Word has already Outline feature and your reader will use that to jump there. Or, you'll simply create a bookmark and believe that your reader will open bookmark dialog box and go there. Or, will you step further to insert a cross reference in your document so that your reader can click on it and jump there. Which method you'll adopt?
Purpose of those elements
Let's think about the purpose of those elements.
As you know bookmarks are use to mark (save) a specific location of a document so that in future you can refer to that location. Cross reference are inserted in document to enable readers to jump to the referred location. Outline is given for you to manage document easily.
So, Which enables you to move directly to specific location in a document?
Suggestion
In exam for this question, you'll need to care about the options given. If there is hyperlink among the options, you should choose it at first. If there is no hyperlink but cross reference, that must be the correct answer. If none of the hyperlink and cross reference is not there, then bookmark will be the correct answer.
Hope this discussion helps you to find the correct answer of the question "Which enables you to move directly to specific location in a document?"
