Probably the most common question - what is a computer - but wondered, I've not answered it yet! Gaurav Yadav asked it in MCQ Sets Ask section and I realized, it is always skipped.
Anyway, let's talk about this question today.
When we try to define a Computer, let's not forget that it is a device and has four major functions - input, processing, output & storage.
Thus, a computer is a programmable device that is capable of receiving data in one form, process and generate information out of it. Additionally, computers can store huge amount of data for future use.
A computer is a device that accepts information (in the form of digitalized data) and manipulates it for some result based on a program or sequence of instructions on how the data is to be processed. ~TechTarget
Data to be processed can be of many form and Computer has various input devices to receive them. For example keyboard for textual data, scanners for graphical, microphone for audio and camera for video data.
Computers process the given data with the help of predefined procedures called programs. Once it processes can provide you the information in required form such as a soft copy display in screen, hardcopy printout through printers, sound through speakers and so on.
Computers have the primary memory for immediate storage and secondary memory for long term memory. They can store a tremendous amount of data of all kind. Because the data and information in computers are represented digitally, they are stored as files. So, be it text, audio, video, images or animations, everything can be saved in computers as files.
